Elimination Week for BCU/Other MEAC Playoff Hopefuls
A quick glance at the top of the MEAC standings reveals a pile-up of five (5) teams currently tied for 1st place in the league. The race for the crown and the conference’s automatic bid to the FCS playoffs will become a bit clearer after this weekend’s contests featuring 4 of the 5 teams tied for first place in head-to-head matchups against the other.
Elimination week begins when 18th ranked Bethune-Cookman (4-1, 7-2) travel to Norfolk, Virginia to take on Norfolk State (4-1, 4-5) for a 7:30, Thursday night ESPNU contest. The Wildcats will look to avenge last year’s 24-27 loss to the Spartans and keep pace atop the league standings.
On Saturday, North Carolina A&T hosts Morgan State (both 4-1 in conference) in Greensboro in a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.
Finally, Florida A&M is out of championship contention but will look to play spoiler against front-running South Carolina State in Tallahassee. The Bulldogs have the inside track to the league’s automatic bid as they currently own the head-to-head tiebreaker over co-leaders North Carolina A&T and Bethune-Cookman and will get their shot at Morgan State and Norfolk State to end the season. If South Carolina State drops a contest and BCU wins out, the Wildcats will be awarded the conference’s automatic bid based upon the MEAC’s tiebreaker system (detailed below).
The Sports Network is also projecting BCU will make the field of 24 as an at-large selectee if they can win out. Another loss by Bethune will all but spoil their bid to secure their 4th conference crown and/or playoff berth within the past 5 years.
Sports Network PLAYOFF FIELD projection as of November 2, 2014:
South Dakota State/Montana State winner at No. 1 seed North Dakota State
Eastern Kentucky/Illinois State winner at No. 8 seed Chattanooga
Cal Poly/McNeese State winner at No. 5 seed Eastern Washington
Jacksonville/South Carolina State winner at No. 4 seed Coastal Carolina
Bethune-Cookman/Liberty winner at No. 3 seed Jacksonville State
Bryant/Richmond winner at No. 6 seed Villanova
Sam Houston State/Montana winner at No. 7 seed Southeastern Louisiana
Fordham/Youngstown State winner at No. 2 seed New Hampshire
On the at-large bubble: Idaho State, Indiana State, James Madison, North Carolina A&T, Northern Arizona
MEAC tiebreaker criteria:

Rushing attack propels @BCUGridiron on Senior Night
Senior running back Anthony Jordan rushed for three fourth quarter touchdowns in his final regular season home game to help Bethune-Cookman push past North Carolina Central 34-20 on Senior Night.
The Wildcats (7-2, 4-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) trailed the Eagles 20-13 heading into the 4th quarter but reeled off 21 unanswered points to secure its 7th win of the season and remain in a four way tie (with SCSU, NCA&T and MSU) for first place in the convoluted MEAC. Jordan’s game-tying and go-ahead 1-yard scores capped 46 and 77-yard drives. After the BCU defense held NCCU on downs, Jordan broke away for a 30-yard touchdown to seal the contest with 1:33 left.
BCU opened the game’s scoring on a Larry Brihm 6 yard touchdown run at the 1:57 mark in the 1st quarter.
The Wildcat defense managed to hold Central to a couple of 3 and outs and 3 yards of offense on their next two possessions but the Eagle offense finally broke free to knot the game at 7 midway through the 2nd quarter. Deyonta Wright’s runs of 20 and 25 yards set NCCU up at midfield on the drive. Malcolm Bell hit a wide open Quentin Atkinson for a 50 yard score on the 3rd play of the 95 yard scoring drive.
NCCU used a more methodical approach to push the lead to 14-7 on their ensuing possession. The Eagles covered 61 yards in 9 plays and capped the drive on Andre Clarke’s TD run from 3 yards out. The touchdown drive was extended after a roughing the passer call against Bethune on 3rd and 6 near midfield.
The Wildcats narrowed the lead to 14-13 on a 43 yard Michael Jones rushing touchdown up the middle; however, BCU failed to convert the “swinging gate” two-point conversion attempt and found itself trailing by 1.
All-American return man Adrian Wilkins took the ensuing BCU kickoff 91 yards to the BCU 4 yardline. Clark scored his second rushing touchdown of the afternoon 1 play later to stretch Central’s lead to 20-13. BCU’s special teams unit came up with their third blocked extra point in as many weeks to keep the score within 7.
Central held the 7 point advantage heading into the final frame but the 4th quarter belonged to Anthony Jordan and the BCU running game. Jordan scored all 3 BCU 4th quarter touchdowns on rushes of 1, 1 and 30 yards and the Wildcats pulled out its third 4th quarter, come from behind home victory this season. (BCU also trailed Grambling and Florida Tech in the 4th quarter at home this season.)
Michael Jones (117) and Larry Brihm (104) both crossed the 100 yards rushing plataue. Brihm also threw for 119 yards on 12-of-21 passing.
Tavarus Dantzler paced the Cats defensively with 10 total tackles. Ralph Williams added 9 of his own.
BCU outgained NCCU 453 yards to 200 on the night. The Beach Cats also piled up 334 yards rushing bringing back memories of the old Wyattbone days.
Andre Clark scored a pair of rushing touchdowns and Malcolm Bell threw for 127 yards and a touchdown for NCCU.
The Wildcats will gear up for a pair of Thursday night ESPNU contests against Norfolk State (Nov 6th) and Hampton (Nov 13th) over the next two weeks and will look to keep pace atop the MEAC standings.

B-CU’s Korey Harris expected to play | News-JournalOnline.com
Great news on the injury update to Korey Harris. Harris, who was carted off the field on a stretcher during Bethune-Cookman’s 49-12 Homecoming victory over Howard on Saturday, is expected to play this weekend according to head coach Brian Jenkins.

BCU rush to 49-12 Homecoming victory over Howard
Bethune-Cookman outrushed the Howard Bison by a nearly 5:1 ratio (268 yards to 58) and secured a 49-12 Homecoming victory in front of 10,247 fans packed inside Daytona Beach’s Municipal Stadium on Saturday. Anthony Jordan led the Wildcats on the ground with 102 yards and 2 touchdowns on 11 attempts.
Jordan also contributed in the passing game and helped setup the Cat’s opening score after hooking up with Quentin Williams for a 19 and 16 yard pass and catch on the first two plays from scrimmage. Jordan capped the drive with a 3 yard touchdown run to push BCU ahead 7-0. The drive covered 75 yards and 11 plays. Williams was 4-4 for 57 yards through the air on the drive.
After a would be three and out on Howard’s ensuing possession, the penalty bug raised its ugly head when BCU extended the Bison’s drive with two consecutive encroachment penalties on 3rd down. The Bison offense capitalize on the Wildcat miscues but could only come away with a 46 yard John Fleck field goal to close the gap to 7-3.
The Wildcats took its second offensive possession the length of the field and found paydirt when Cary White raced off tackle 19 yards for BCU’s second rushing touchdown of the afternoon. The drive was sustained on the heels of a beautiful over the shoulder 30 yard grab by DeVonte Washington on 3rd down and 8 from the Howard 49 yardline.
Fleck added a second Bison field goal on Howard’s second possession this time from 31 yards out.
A 69 yard Drexler Dixon kickoff return followed by a 15 yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on a Howard player for participating without a helmet setup BCU with great field position at the Howard 13. Quentin Williams called his own number five plays later and scored on a 1 yard quarterback keeper to push the Wildcat lead to 21-6. The score remained the same heading into halftime.
The offensive fireworks continued in the second half when HU’s Robert Mercer returned the second half kickoff 74 yards to the BCU 23. 4 plays later, reigning MEAC Offensive Player of the year, Greg McGhee, scored on a one yard quarterback keeper to cut BCU’s lead to 21-12.
The Wildcats, not to be outdone, opened its first possession of the second half in similarly spectacular fashion. After a modest return to its own 21 yardline, Anthony Jordan scampered 79 yards for his second touchdown run on BCU’s first offensive play in the second half. Jordan’s touchdown run pushed BCU’s lead to 28-12 and was the Wildcat’s longest play from scrimmage this season.
“We got punched in the mouth (to open the second half),” B-CU coach Brian Jenkins said. “They came out with a big return off of our guys’ lackadaisical play. Then, they got it in the end zone a couple of plays later. But I tell our guys it’s not that you get punched in the mouth, it’s how you respond. And they responded.”
Quarterback Quentin Williams was a very respectable 6 for 9 passing for 114 yards through 2 and half quarters. However, Williams, who also ran for a score, was replaced by redshirt freshman quarterback Larry Brihm in the middle of the 3rd quarter.
“We had it planned to play Larry,” Jenkins said. “We think he’s an explosive player.”
Brihm rewarded his coach’s trust by leading the Wildcats on 3 second half scoring drives during which time he threw his first collegiate touchdown (a 24 yard strike to Jhomo Gordon in the right corner of the endzone); he scored on his first college rushing touchdown on a 2 yard keeper; and he engineered the drive that ended with Jamaruz Thompkins scoring his first collegiate touchdown (on a 2 yard run).
Brihm finished the contest 7 for 11 passing for 58 yards and 1 touchdown.
Ralph Williams led the defensive charge accounting for 11 total tackles, 2 tackles for loss and 1 fumble recovery.
Injury update–
Defensive lineman Korey Harris, who was transported off the field on a stretcher, is reported to be fine according to head coach Brian Jenkins. “He had some numbness in the beginning but the feeling returned before he was carted off.” Our doctors did a tremendous job of immediately addressing the issue which gives me a lot of confidence. He was transported to the hospital for precautionary reasons but he is fine.”
