Tyree Smallwood Video Hightlights

As promised, Brian Jenkins continues to add quality players to the 2012 recruiting class.  The Wildcats newest prize signee is Tyree Smallwood who made a name for himself in 2010 by rushing for 2,511 yards and 37 all-purpose touchdowns at Cornwell Central High School (New Windsor, NY).

Smallwood originally signed with Syracuse in 2011 but will play wide receiver at BCU in 2012. According to Smallwood, he never made it to Syracuse because of a paperwork issue with the NCAA.  Rutgers, Cincinnati, and Central Michigan also offered Smallwood full scholarships when he was lighting it up the scoreboard in high school.

Congratulations to Coach Beverlin

New baseball skipper, Jason Beverlin

Congratulations to BCU’s new baseball Coach Jason Beverlin for securing the first win of his head coaching career on Friday night .  The Wildcats scored 7 runs in the top of the 7th inning and held on for an 8-6 victory over Florida Gulf Coast University in Ft Myers.

Sophomore Scott Gardner received the opening day nod on the mound.  The 6′ 2″ right hander struck out 6 of the 19 batters he faced and yielded 4 hits and 2 earned runs in 4 innings of work.  Corner outfielders David Lee and Josh Johnson led the Wildcats’ offensive charge.  Both Lee and Johnson went 2-for-5 with 2 RBIs apiece.

The teams play the second of their three game set tomorrow at 2:00 P.M.  You can follow the action live at the link below.

Allen Suber accepts coaching position at UMass

Former Wildcat quarterback great Allen Suber has accepted a coaching position with the University of Massachusetts.

The precocious coach served as BCU’s wide receivers coach in 2010 and 2011 and recruiting coordinator this past season.  He joins the Minutemen as they complete their transition to a full FBS and MAC schedule in 2012.

Brian Jenkins and Allen Suber

“Suberman” earned his moniker by making the seemingly impossible look routine in his playing days.  He was a 2003 Walter Payton Award finalist and is the Wildcats’ all-time leader in rushing yards (2,897) and touchdowns (39).  He has been recognized as one of the 50 Greatest Players in MEAC history.

Bethune Cookman 2012 Signing Class

Third year head coach Brian Jenkins could hardly hold back his radiant and infectious smile when announcing what could be the best signing class of his brief tenure at Bethune Cookman.  The nearly 100 Wildcat supporters who attended the Signing Day Bash clapped and cheered as coach Jenkins highligted 15 new additions to the Fighting Wildcat football team.  8 of the 15 signees revealed on Wednesday night are already enrolled in classes and are slated to participate in Spring practice.

Stacking the Chips and Building for the Future

Although many pundits believe that it takes a minimum of three years to accurately rate a recruiting class, coach Jenkins has already labled this class a success.  Coach Jenkins stated:

“We were able to address our areas of need, build depth, sign all by 2 or 3 of the players that we targeted, as well as find some immediate (impact) players.  I can already call this class a success.  There is no need to wait for 2 or 3 years.”  He went on to state: “And this is only the first half of our signing class.  We got guys with more girth and guys who are longer on the offensive line.  We got taller in the secondary.  We got more explosive at wide receiver.”

“We’re stacking the chips and building for the future.  And there is still more to come.  I’ve got a few surprises up my sleeve that will be revealed at a later time.”

The 15 signees include 2 defensive linemen; 4 defensive backs, 1 linebacker, 6 offensive linemen, and 2 wide receivers.  Expect 4 or 5 additional signees before the kickoff of Fall practice.
