Wildcats lose big to UCF (41-7)

IMG_7602Bradford Gillens | Orlando, FL-Before a near capacity crowd of 44,510 at Brighthouse Networks Stadium, after leading 7-3 after the first quarter, Bethune-Cookman surrendered 38 unanswered points to the University of Central Florida en route to a 41-7 defeat. With the loss, the Cats dropped their seventh straight game to the Knights, the last coming in a 38-7 decision in 1995.

Once again, penalties plagued the Wildcats as they were flagged a season high 17 times for 137 yards after a 10-150 yard performance against Grambling. Several times during the game those penalties either extended Knights drives or led to UCF scores. When I spoke to head coach Brian Jenkins last week regarding the extreme amount of penalties his teams accrue on a weekly basis, he told me “he would live with them” because it oftentimes is the result of them playing physical. He may want to reevaluate that assessment after today’s game.

Leading the B-CU offense was quarterback Quentin Williams, who finished 9-12 for 102 yards along with 32 rushing yards, but was constantly pressured by the UCF defensive front, leading to him being sacked a season high five times. The Wildcat offense struggled mightily against the Knights defensive front, and never really got anything going. Jenkins was visibly dejected after this loss and through one of his assistant coaches, declined to speak to the media and did not make Bethune-Cookman players available to the media either.

LeBranden Richardson eager to face old UCF teamates

LeBrandon Richardson #50

DAYTONA BEACH — When Bethune-Cookman’s LeBranden Richardson takes the field at Bright House Networks Stadium Saturday, he should feel right at home.

As a former UCF player, Richardson is quite familiar with the surroundings of the Knights home turf, but this time the confines won’t be so friendly. Nonetheless, he’s looking forward to seeing some of his old friends.

“It’s going to be exciting … I love that Bright House stadium. It will be like a homecoming, bringing back some old memories. I made my first collegiate sack at that stadium,” said Richardson, now a senior defensive end at B-CU. “I won’t be nervous. I will just like any other game, but I will get that feeling once I get out there, I suppose. I’m excited for it.”

Some of his former teammates are gone and so is his old position coach Jim Panagos, now the defensive line coach at Rutgers, but the Knights’ roster still features some of his closest friends, including UCF receiver Josh Reese.

BCU Football adds UCF to 2014 Schedule

SONY DSCBethune-Cookman annouced earlier this week that the University of Central Florida has been added to the 2014 football schedule.  The Wildcats and Knights will hook up inside Brighthouse Stadium on UCF’s campus on September 20th.  This year’s contest will mark the first time the two teams have met on the gridiorn since UCF joined the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) in 1996.

BCU and UCF met annually from 1981-1995 in what became known as the Central Florida Classic.  The Knights hold a 10-5 head-to-head advantage in the series.

BCU’s 2014 11-game schedule features 2 FBS opponents (FIU-8/30, UCF-9/20), 4 home games (Grambling-9/13, Del State-10/4, Howard-10/11, NCCU-11/1), and road games against Savannah St-10/18, SCSU-10/25, NSU-11/08, and Hampton-11/15.  BCU concludes the regular season with its annual neutral field showdown against  in-state rival Florida A&M in the Florida Classic.

A 12th opponent may be named at a future date.
